As an aside it was great to see and race against Mick Ives today, a man who, as you know, has done an awful lot for British cyclocross.Next week WMCCL rnd8 at Soilihull (Elmdon park)

7th May

FNTL (week6)

The night started in beautiful sunshine with a cool stiff breeze down the home straight. St Johns were out in force. Terry Chance and Joe Page rode in the Youths, while Mark Allen, Martin and Dan Staines rode in the B cat seniors.

At 7.30 pm Joe and Terry started the evening with a 6 lap Scratch. Joe stuck to the right wheel to finish in the points.

The sunny evening meant that the B cats had a large group of 20-25 riders and the pack was nervous with no one wanting to work. The jumpy race had some blistering laps punctuated by very slow ones. With 1.5 laps to go and the bunch slowed and was 4 wide on the bottom banking as it eased on to the straight Dan followed by Martin went over the top as the bell was sounded. Mark boxed in was swamped as the group trying to jump on Dan’s wheel accelerated in to the top banking. Riders all looking to get a faster wheel funnelled into the bottom of the turn. A touch wheels and a Birmingham rider was down. A Solihull rider piled on top of him, followed by a Stourbridge rider. The race was annulled with Dan 3 bikes lengths ahead a 100 yards to go.

The Birmingham rider was taken off with a serious concussion and chest pains, the Solihull rider with cuts to his hand after getting caught in a wheel. Both riders where released from hospital the same night. Though the Birmingham rider has broken hand and will be out of racing for a little while.

The pause in the evening riding meant the 5 races and the Madison was cancelled. And next up was Joe and Terry in a Kilo Scratch with Terry getting the better of Joe for 4th.

Mark and Dan rode the 500m Handicap with Dan blasting over the top of every one and winning by good margin from Nick Selibas. Mark finished in a line of 4 riders all within a wheel of each other.

Joe continued to show good form by taking a number of 2nd and 3rds in the 9 lap Points race. Terry rode well showing improving track skills.

The last event of the night was an A+B 30 scratch, The B-cats lined up for a 20 lap scratch but this was changed at the last minute. The slow start was a thankful relief due to some cold legs in the B-cats. The race quickly split into 3 groups with the difference between A+B cats clearly shown. Dan and Martin finished well with points for each. Mark was at -2 laps.

Week 7 is looking good with the weather fine dry at present. Tea, Coffee, Cakes are available and after 8pm the Bar opens for those not driving (or racing). 5 minutes West of Junction 3 the track is easy to reach. A good evenings’ entertainment out for the whole family hope to see you there Friday.

23rd May

FNTL

The amazing happened tonight. Despite showers every where else in Worcestershire Week 4 of the Halesowen track League was ON! Only the second night this year. The rain held off until the 10 laps into the A/B cat Vets and Ladies race. With only the A/B seniors missing a Race.

The night started well Terry Chance being pipped on the line for his bunch in the 8 lap scratch. Terry continued with a 5/6th place in the 500 meter Handicap. Come the Devil the Halesowen riders (about 1/2 the youths) rode like a team time trial to eliminate every non Halesowen rider by 2/3rd's of the way through the race.

This year the Youths are evenly split between the older or well coached Halesowen riders and just about every one else. Terry rode well all night showing tactical ideas that only need a little more time to start reaping some wins.

Mark Allen was the only senior rider tonight. He only managed 11th in the 10 lap scratch, and was shelled out after trying to pull back a Halesowen rider in the course de prime.

Halesowen dominated the B cats with 8 riders acting as a great team. Constantly firing people up the track, blocking the chase and leading out the better sprinters if all else failed. Jess Booth Who recently earning her place on the Talent/ GB Squad certainly gave no quarter. While possibly demoralizing to see these tactics in a B-cat event, if i had 8 riders from WSTCC on the track i would want to do the same.
