| 12th December | Choose Cycling Cult Racing MegaCrossWith temperatures struggling to get much above 1 or 2 degrees for the early races the Under 10s and Under 12s were definitely not in the mood for hanging around as they tackled an undulating course, with some tricky off camber bankings. Emile Alexander (Wyre Forest CRC) took the honors in the Under 10s category after a race long lead, with St Johns brothers Joe and Michael Dyson finishing 10th and 13th respectively. With the course now bedded in, and the sunshine having now broken through the early mist, a field of 55 veterans, juniors and ladies lined up for the off. Local man Phil Blacker (Wyre Forest CRC) was first onto the course proper after a starting loop that took riders around the edge of Top Barn's largest fishing lake. First time through the finish and Blacker had a small lead over former National Elite Champion, Steve Knight (Endura/Thule), renowned for his ‘steady' starts, followed by local junior Joe Page (Echelon Cycles). The expected surge from Knight never materialised, and Blacker took the 7 lap race by a minute and a half from Knight, with Page taking the prize for first junior a further 2 minutes down. A great ride by Ruth Eyles (Beacon RCC) saw her take the ladies category, and 11th overall in the race, with team mate John Rice taking the Over 50s category. Martin Staines enjoyed his first cross race this year finishing 24th with Pammie Murray-Hopkin not far behind in 39th. On to the climax of the day, the senior race, and a strong contingent from outside the West Midlands region were keen to make sure the mileage travelled to Worcester was rewarded by high finishing positions. First time through the finish line and a three man lead group had formed, consisting of Rob Smail (Cyclepremier/Metaltek), Steven Allen (Kenilworth Wheelers) and Mark Cotton (Bycka Sport). The leading trio were pursued by Lee Shunburne (Matlock CC) and Paul Bethell (Team Elite). By the end of lap 3, Smail had a small lead over his rivals, which he duly increased over subsequent laps, only to see a late surge from Allen. This was not enough to deny the lone leader, Smail, who won the ten lap race, but only 13 seconds ahead of Allen. Mark Corbett and Dave Preece flew the St Johns colours and finished 19th and 20th respectively. There some photos of the event on the new gallery. |

the South East of Coventry. It begins on the A423 with a short fast downhill

out of Princethorpe forms the only real hill on the course, and a tame
one by SPOCO standards. Round a couple of Z bends then flat and fast onto

Fast again with a helpful tailwind two roundabouts then it was off up
the slip road at the now demolished Peugeot factory onto the A423, a couple

been gathering during Lap1 and now it was time for them to do their worst,

| 1st August | Worcester News RR Ian Knight (Virgin Active) wins Worcester News RR from Tony Gibb and Simon Wilson (www.cyclepremier.com-Metaltek). Organised and marshalled by the Worcester St Johns Cycling Club, a full field of 80 riders set out for 125km over 6 laps of the Severn Stoke course. On the 2nd lap the break that would dominate the race escaped the bunch over the Severn Stoke climb. On the descent from the feed hill a few miles later a runaway horse hindered the chasing bunch, requiring the race to be stopped. When the race re-started the 17 man break (including a few riders who cunningly made it across in the confusion) were credited with a 25 second head start over the bunch. The gap remained the same throughout the race as the break was too large to work smoothly and the bunch was led along at a good pace by a band of sacrificial workers, most notably Ben Anstie (Chippenham Wheelers) who gave his all to the chase. With 2 miles to go Gibb and Knight escaped the break and gained a few hundred metres that was enough to allow them to fight out the win up the final climb of Severn Stoke. Knight led it out and hung on to win by a length as Gibb finished runner up for the second consecutive year. Five seconds later 2009 winner Simon Wilson led in the remains of the break with junior rider Matt Bailey finishing a creditable 4th. The bunch sprint was won by Ian Rees (Wilier/Big Maggys) just catching the tail end of the break for 14th place. Afterwards Knight, a former elite rider and team mate of mine for the Terry Wright Cycles team in the late 90s, found the whole experience “surreal” enjoying his comeback season after 12 years out of the sport. The win was Ian’s 3rd of the season and a first cat licence beckons. Ian said “I really did not know what to expect at the start of the year, I am absolutely made up” Gibb was pleased with his team’s efforts to split the race but disappointed that he didn’t quite have the legs to secure the victory. Team mate Wilson was pleased to celebrate his 30th birthday with 3rd place a fine follow up to his win the previous year. Knight collected the Worcester News trophy, presented every year since 1958 to the winner of this summer classic and joined the list of notable winners including Bradley Wiggins, Matt Stephens, Steve Farrell and Darryl Webster amongst others. Result: 1 Ian Knight

He said ‘It’s great to be welcomed into the Worcester St Johns Cycling Club and take part in training rides and races with help from many club members’. Before coming to Worcester Johannes concentrated on mountain bike racing and had never ridden a time trial. He showed a natural talent for the ‘race of truth’ and earlier in the week was presented with Worcester St Johns CC bronze and silver medals for achieving 10 mile standard times for his age group. In Thursday’s race, riding a specialist carbon fibre time trial machine lent by a club member Johannes achieved his personal best time of 24 minutes 7 seconds, 25 miles an hour average over 10 miles. The last ride of the night was a sizzler with the competition between Jacob Tipper and Dom Jelfs coming to the fore.
