ALEC DAVIES
Back
Alec Davies was born in Worcester in 1923. Before becoming interested in Cycling Alec was involved in Basketball for a number of years. Alec was called up to join the Army during the War. He was posted to Carlisle Barracks where it was the practice to erect Basketball nets during recreation periods on the paradeground. Alec played
for years, after his de-mob he continued to play and qualified as a referee.
In 1972 Alec's son David became interested in cycle racing and
took part in the St Johns evening time trial series which Alec came to watch.
After standing with Gerry Hughes, who was time keeping, for a week or two
Gerry asked Alec to help with the timing. Alec probably didn’t realise
what this would lead too. Alec joined the Worcester St Johns in 1972 and for the 1973 season he was elected Club
Time-keeper.
In 1977 the incumbent Time Trial Secretary left the club to move to Scotland and Alec was elected to replace him. Alec continued in this post until he chose to resign in 2000. During his 23 years as Time-Trial Secretary Alec never failed to turn up at an event even if it was only to tell riders that the event was cancelled because of bad weather or road works.
Alec represented the Club at the RTTC (now CTT) and BCF (now
British Cycling) meetings for over 20 years and was Elected an Honorary Life
Vice President of the Worcester St Johns CC for his services to the club and
Cycling in general
