MARGARET CHAMBERLAIN
Back

Margaret was born in Castlemorton, a small village in the shadow of the Malvern Hills. The village had, and still has, a school where Margaret was educated. In 1951 Margaret bought her first bike, a Raleigh Sport, so she could get to work or into Malvern or to meet friends. Even in the 50s public transport in the country was not readily available at all times. Having never learned to drive, her bicycle has been the main form of transport for over 50 years.

Margaret had little interest in sport in general, but her husband Gordon, who she married in March 1955, was a member of the Worcester St Johns CC and Margaret joined the club in 1985. Since she joined Margaret has been a regular helper and organiser at club events. Gordon has been the clubs Social Secretary for several years and he and Margaret have organised the Clubs annual dinners, a number of fund raising and charity events; she has organised the teas, cakes and sandwiches at the clubs road races and time trials.

Margaret has two complaints about bike riding these days. The first is the way cars and lorries don't leave enough room for cyclists. The second is that she has not been able to find time among all her other commitments to use her bike more since she retired.
