Worcester
St Johns CC
Road Race 8th May 2005
Back
Top - BackAndrew Moore (Power Bar RT) won the Worcester St. Johns CC Spring road race in a last ditch attempt in a race that always looked likely to come to an 80-man bunch sprint. Despite constant attacks, the ever alert bunch quickly neutralised riders seeking to make a break.
The third of five laps, saw the only respectable looking break of the race establish itself as ten riders, including favourites such as Moore, Paul Wilkes (Team Bradgate), Charles Zanettacci (Leisure Lakes), Ian Fagan (Tam Power Bar) and Gavin Poupart (Worcester St. Johns), gained a slim advantage. The break never gained more than 20 seconds and was bought back after 15 miles.
With a few miles to go, Moore, Wilkes and Steve Dring (Stilton RT) gained a small lead, desperately fighting on as the final ascent of Severn Stoke Bank approached. The bunch just made contact over the top, swallowing up Dring. Moore held on over the summit with the line 200 metres ahead for the win. Wilkes was just a bike length behind and leader of the pack Matt Blythe (Newport CC) right on Wilkes' wheel.
